ISTA 230 Introduction to Web Design (Fall 2017)

ISTA 230 Resources

HTML entities allow you to include reserved characters in your HTML. Reserved characters are those characters that have special meaning in HTML. For example, the < symbol is used to denote the beginning of an HTML element. If you wanted to include a "less-than" symbol in the content of your HTML, you would need to use the corresponding HTML entity (i.e., <).

In addition to reserved characters, HTML entities also allow you to include characters not found on most keyboards. For example, if you wanted to include a lowercase Greek sigma character (σ), you would use the corresponding corresponding HTML entity (i.e., σ).

All HTML entities have a name and a number associated with them. For example, the copyright symbol (©) can be included in your HTML by specifying © or by specifying ©. Using the HTML entity name is easier to read and remember. That said, it is not always recognized, particularly by some older browsers. HTML entity numbers are less easy to read and remember but benefit from greater support across browsers.
